Introduction
This page will show you how to add Posts to your page after you have created both a page and a Post Type. By adding the Post Types element to your page, you will create what is called a "Post Browser."
Post Browsers list the posts that are collected in a Post Type, and allow you to change filtering and display options as needed.
Adding a Post Type
Begin by clicking the "Pages" tab, located in HillTop's top menu. Locate the appropriate page in the list (ex. "Press Releases"), then click the Edit button (pencil icon) to the left of the page title. This will bring you to the content editor.
Here, click the Content Element labeled "Post Types," in the right sidebar. This will add a Post Browser to your page.
From the new Post Browser's content block, click the "+Existing Post Types" button near the bottom of the block, as seen below.
Next, select the Post Type(s) that you wish to display, from the list in the "Select Post Type" section. Once you have selected your Post Types, click the "Submit" button. This add the posts from your selected Post Type to the page.
Optional - Settings
If you would like to change the default settings for displaying posts, click link labeled "Settings," in the top right section of the blue header. This will bring up the settings menus. There are five tabs in the settings: Display Options, Labels, Features, Variables, and Layout.
Note, some websites may display fewer settings, while others may have had extra, custom designed settings added. If you would like to increase your site's functionality by adding one or more of the settings described below, contact [email protected]. If you require assistance with settings that do not appear in this section of the User Guide, contact [email protected].
From these tabs, you will be able to change the display options of your Post Browser to create calendars or maps, filter your news articles by month or year, attach or remove labels, and more. Each tab and it's options are described in detail below.
Display Options
Below is a list of the fields you will see in your Post Browser's Disply Options tab, along with descriptions of each setting.
- The "Browse by Month & Year" option is the default setting. This will create a a table, which lists the title of each Post, along with their creation/publication date, in separate columns. Each month will have it's own heading, as seen in the example below. The Post titles act as links to the content of the Post.
The example shown at the bottom of this page is set to "Browse by Month & Year." - The "Gallery" option creates an image gallery, for Post Types with image-based content. Gallery content can be browsed by clicking the arrows on the left or right of the current image. Clicking the image will forward visitors to the text content of the Post.
- When choosing "Digest Format," the entire "Content" section of each Post is displayed within the Post Browser.
- To create a calendar on your page, select "Calendar." Selecting a calendar-specific Post Type will populate your calendar with events.
- The "List" layout creates a compact, single spaced version of the "Browse by Month & Year" format. This layout displays only the shorthand date of each Post, and omits the month and year headings.
- Selecting "Map" will allow you to create a map on your page. This format uses addresses from your map-specific Post Type to create Points-of-Interest on an interactive map.
- Selecting "Panels" uses a large, image-based format. Your newest Post will be displayed as a large 600 x 400 image, with the next three Posts appearing on the right as three equally sized thumbnail images. This layout is recommended for "Featured" posts, or other Post Types that include large, high quality images.
- "Tiles" is another image-based layout. Your three newest Posts will be displayed as a row of three equally sized images, with a drop-down function that allows visitors to view later Posts. This layout is also recommended for "featured" Posts.
This option determines which section of your page the Posts will be displayed on.
- The default "Template Placement" is "Main Body." This will display your Post Browser within the central content area of your page.
- Selecting "Sidebar" will display the Post Browser in the right (or left - depending on your specific site layout) margin of your page.
